Vayu - Connecting Nepalis Across the Globe

Dear Members of TGND,

December’s edition reflects a moment of pause and perspective as the year comes to a close, while the work continues steadily in the background. We share updates on the diaspora voting initiative as we await government response, insights from timely webinars on immigration and Nepal’s evolving political landscape, and reflections from conversations on accountability, leadership, and the role of the diaspora in shaping the country’s future. This month also captures TGND’s presence across Kathmandu and New York through panels, policy discussions, and community gatherings, reinforcing the trust and connections that underpin our work. As we head into 2026, the focus remains clear: strengthening dialogue, supporting our global community, and creating space for Nepalis everywhere to stay informed, engaged, and connected.

Diaspora Voting Initiative 🗳️

In October and November, TGND intensified its work on diaspora voting by partnering with SpeakUp Nepal, Nepal Policy Institute, and a growing group of legal, policy, and tech experts to push for inclusive voting rights for Nepalis abroad. Following the Gen Z–led protests and the announcement of elections in March 2026, this effort took on new urgency. TGND helped launch both online and offline petitions, submitted proposals to the Election Commission, the Home Ministry, and the Prime Minister’s advisors, and received encouraging feedback at each step. Alongside this, we conducted a global diaspora survey across 11 countries, which reinforced a clear demand for fair and democratic elections, and supported research pointing to i-Voting as a practical and cost-effective solution.

At this stage, we are awaiting positive updates from the government on enabling voting rights for the diaspora. We remain hopeful that continued dialogue, evidence-based recommendations, and sustained pressure will lead to concrete policy action, allowing Nepalis around the world to finally have a voice in shaping the country’s future.
